Serena turned seven last month! It’s hard to believe. She requested a chocolate ice cream cake with Swedish Fish, so that’s what she got. Yum, rock hard Swedish Fish…
I’d been looking forward to seeing Houston for a long while. In order to really experience it, we purchased the Houston City Pass, giving us half price on five major attractions.
Through this adventure, we were able to visit the Space Center, the Natural Science Museum, the Children’s Museum, the Zoo, and the Aquarium. It was quite a whirlwind of activity! We’ve been to several Natural Science museums throughout this trip, but I think this was my favorite. They had an amazing hall of paleontology, which broke up the various eras in a sort of prehistoric safari, with many visual representations to help the imagination.
I’ll let Dan go into detail about this exhibit. He’s very knowledgeable about this field and did an amazing job educating all of us! We ran out of time, so we ended up going back for another round. As it turns out, Thursdays are free from 2-5pm, so it worked out beautifully!
I’d never been to a space center. I was surprised by the thorough tour of Nasa with all kinds of behind the scenes information. I’ll let Cole get into the details, but I wanted to at least mention it.
The zoo and aquarium were very popular with the kids. I found new creatures to admire and learned quite a bit. Here’s a Red Panda.
I liked this guy so much, I actually purchased a stuffed animal for myself in his honor. It’s been decades since I’ve done that!
I also loved their insect area. They had tons of stick insects, creatures I’ve always found so fascinating. Dan was happy to know that I enjoyed this exhibit. Perhaps his love of insects is rubbing off on me…
And the children’s museum was one of the best I’d ever seen, with tons of interactive exhibits and a complete little Kidtropolis so they can learn about business and money management. Cole and Camille spent over an hour working in the bank. They liked handling all that money!
As you can see, Camille also experimented with face painting!
I also enjoy finding the free little gems hidden in these large cities. Houston has many!
We discovered a giant water wall, which stands sixty-four feet tall. Serena did a little dance in front of it.
We also found a cool little car art museum. Even the building was cool! I loved the various cars they had on display, along with other forms of contemporary art.
Discovery Green sits right in the heart of Houston. It’s small, but has a wonderful playground, complete with abstract spinney vessels. These art forms housed adults as well as children and seemed to be a popular place to hide away from the world for a little.
At night, the green was transformed into a field of light! I found it very serene to sit amongst the LED blossoms as they turned various colors.
Overall, I’ve really enjoyed out stay here. It’s a great town, full of life and culture!
Laura,
I love reading these detailed descriptions of things you see and do. I almost feel like
I’m there with you. Now I’ll see what all the other Shermans wrote.
Love, Mom
I’m so glad you like the blog! I have a lot of fun sharing my thoughts and experiences then helping the children do the same. Can’t wait to see you!!
Hi Laura,
I finally found the time to check out your website, so cool! It looks great! Turns out we were on the same campground in New Orléans! We loved the Segnette Bayou, as our spot was right opposite from a playground and the kids got to play so much. I also loved New Orléans, would love to have stayed a little longer!
We are now in the Austin area, in Bastrop to be exact. We plan to stay here 5 days to check out Austin and surroundings. San Antonio was great, we loved the city, although it was quit rainy. But I guess that was better then the floods in Houston and Louisiana!
Where are you at? Safe travels!!
Marijke and family
We really enjoyed meeting you! I will write to you privatedly as well, but wanted to respond here as well. Looking forward to keeping in touch!
